"Emerging Topics in IT-Security"

IT-Security research is concerned with protecting communication from errors, eavesdroppers, and manipulation. This seminar should give students insight into new developments and advanced research areas that go beyond the very basic concepts of IT-security and cryptography. (Having a basic understanding of those will therefore be useful in following the seminar.)

Topics include (but are not limited to):

• Using FPGAs in IT-security
• The current state of Post-Quantum cryptography
• Usability of privacy tools
• Secure Development
• Distributed Identity Management
• Security Operations
• ...

The list of topics is available now: Seminar Topics The literature indicated there is not cited scientifically. It is intended only as inspiration - you should research further literature.

Please submit four preferences here. The seminar password is required. (It will be announced in the kick-off.) Please only register once.

Organization

Seminar places are exclusively awarded centrally via Uni2Work. TUM students please use the corresponding TUM process. Please, create a guest Uni2Work Account. Otherwise, you will not be able to submit your work items.

Basic knowledge of IT-security or cryptography is not formally required, but strongly recommended. Please indicate in your application whether you have any previous knowledge in this area so we know our audience.

The seminar will be held in English.

The seminar will imitate a scientific conference. That means:

• Students will prepare a conference paper (technical report) on a chosen topic and submit it to the seminar organizer (the fictitious program committee).
• When the first version has been submitted, each participant will be assigned one or two papers to review (according to a template), so that each paper will receive two reviews. This should increase the quality of the submissions and familiarize the participants with the process of a scientific publication process.
• After receiving the reviews, the authors have another 2 weeks to address the comments/suggestions. Both the quality of the submitted reviews and the implementation of the comments will be considered in the grading process.
• Finally, students present their (possibly corrected) paper at the re-enacted conference at the end of the term. The conference will run over one or two days at the end of the term. The exact date and the agenda will be announced below.

Master students will be assigned a topic to work on alone, Bachelor students will work on a topic in pairs.

*Seminar spots are in great demand. Therefore, anyone who does not participate in the kick-off event (without giving notice) will lose their seminar spot, which will be re-assigned to another student.

The final grade of the seminar is determined by the quality of the scientific paper, presentation, and the contributed reviews. Participation in the final conference is mandatory throughout the whole event, which will take place in person.

The grade will also be impacted by conformance to the templates, conformance to the required page limit and compliance with the presentation rules.

The seminar will be held in English, including end of term presentations, but we explicity encourage also students with shaky English skills to apply - this is an opportunity to learn and we will not hold your language mistakes against you in grading.

Paper criteria:

The paper must meet the following criteria:

• Use of the Latex Template IEEE (see Downloads)
• Scope: 6 to 8 pages (strict min. and max., incl. references)

Presentation criteria:

The presentation must meet the following criteria:

• less than 10 words per slide
• max. 12 minutes of presentation (in total)
• one special slide addressing the question: "How is your research valuable/relevant for LMU / LRZ / MWN?"

Non-conformance to one of the criteria will impact the final grade.

• Use the LMU library's bookmarklet to access scientific content behind paywalls (like Springer).
• Watch Steven Pinker's talk on Language and Style
• Check the Bibtex-citations you find with your sources - many websites provide them. This makes citing your sources virtually effortless.
• Keep the following guidelines in mind:
  • Know your ..
    • .. audience: What would make them want to read your paper? What background knowledge do they need?
    • .. intent: What are you trying to provide? Lecture notes? New insights? Proof of your scientific abilities?
    • .. and message: What is the key take away from your paper? There is probably one main message and a few "sub-messages". Structure your paper along those.
  • Be specific: Provide examples for abstract concepts (e.g., "alice@mail.com" for an e-mail address) See what we did there?
  • Use graphics, plots and tables. They make everything better! (And please remember to label your axes.)

Rules for Online Teaching

• .. recording or redirecting of streams by participants is not allowed.
• .. distributing content (video, audio, images, PDFs, etc.) in other channels than those foreseen by the author is not allowed.

If you violate either of these rules, please expect to be expelled from the respective course. We reserve the right for further action.
